What happens during cardiopulmonary resuscitation?

Date:2024-04-01      Author:Shanghai Chinon medical Model & Equipment Manufacturing Co., LTD

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency medical measure, mainly used to maintain the patient's blood circulation and respiratory function through artificial methods in the case of cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, in order to save the patient's life. There are a number of situations that may arise during the performance of CPR, these are discussed in detail below.

First of all, the most common situation is that the patient suddenly loses consciousness and does not breathe normally or stops breathing. This may be caused by acute myocardial infarction, severe arrhythmia, drowning, electric shock, etc. In this case, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including chest compressions and artificial respiration, should be started immediately to maintain the patient's basic vital signs.

When performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the patient may experience deformation of the chest wall or stiff neck. This may be due to the patient being obese, older, or having certain medical conditions. In this case, the position and intensity of the compressions need to be adjusted to ensure the effectiveness of the compressions. At the same time, for patients with neck stiffness, special airway opening methods may be needed, such as head-tilt and chin-lift techniques or jaw-lifting techniques.

In addition, during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the patient may vomit or have foreign objects in the mouth. This may block the airway and affect the effectiveness of artificial respiration. Therefore, before performing artificial respiration, the patient's airway should be ensured to be clear and foreign bodies or secretions in the oral cavity should be removed in a timely manner.

At the same time, the success rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is affected by many factors, including the time when resuscitation is started, the professionalism of resuscitation technology, and the patient's own condition. Therefore, when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, it should be started as early as possible and carried out under the guidance of professionals. It is very important for non-professionals to receive CPR training so that they can provide correct and effective treatment in an emergency.

In addition to the above situations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation may also encounter other unexpected situations, such as the patient's sudden arrhythmia, or the patient's consciousness has not yet recovered after the heartbeat is restored, etc. These situations require prompt and accurate judgment and handling by professionals.

It is worth noting that although cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an effective first aid measure, it cannot completely replace professional medical treatment. Therefore, while performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the emergency number should be called as soon as possible and the patient should be sent to the hospital for further treatment.

In short, various situations may be encountered during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which require rescuers to have professional knowledge and skills in order to provide correct and effective treatment in emergency situations. At the same time, increasing the public's awareness and emphasis on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and strengthening cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and education are also important ways to improve the success rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
